Reviewing the various dimensions of Iran–Russia economic, transit and banking cooperation, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said that Tehran–Moscow economic cooperation benefits the two nations and the countries of the region.
Ebrahim Raisi and Vladimir Putin, the presidents of Iran and Russia, met and held talks in Samarkand on 17 Shahrivar (8 September). After a detailed review of their cooperation, the two leaders expressed satisfaction with the remarkable progress in bilateral ties, above all in banking, land and sea transport, customs and energy.
The Iranian president assessed Tehran–Moscow economic cooperation as beneficial to the two nations and the countries of the region, and went over the various dimensions of the two countries’ economic, transit and banking cooperation.
Raisi also reviewed NATO’s expansionist policies and touched on developments in the Caucasus, saying that any change in the region’s geopolitics is a destabilizing and unacceptable move.
Recalling the Americans’ miscalculation in dealing with independent countries, Ebrahim Raisi stressed: America thinks that whichever country it sanctions, that government and nation will grind to a halt — but this is a miscalculation, because in practice they have only restricted themselves.
Vladimir Putin, for his part, described Russia’s and Iran’s positions as convergent and well aligned, and pointed to the dangers of NATO’s overreach: NATO’s threats are not limited to Europe — they extend to other countries around the world.
The Russian president, emphasizing that the Islamic Republic of Iran has achieved good results in advanced technologies, added: we are keen to cooperate in these fields.
Pointing to the extensive trade relations between Moscow and Tehran, Vladimir Putin welcomed the growing number of visits by the two countries’ economic officials and said: trade between the two countries grew 81% last year and another 30% in the first five months of this year.
The Russian president, noting that the new Tehran–Moscow cooperation agreement is in its final stages, announced his readiness to draw up the draft of a strategic economic cooperation document between the two countries.
Putin pointed to the stepped-up interactions and consultations between the two countries’ economic officials, saying: a delegation from Russia, with representatives of 80 major Russian companies, will travel to Iran next week.
The Russian president, stressing that “we will do whatever is necessary for Iran’s permanent membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation,” underlined that once the legal formalities are completed, this will happen as soon as possible.
Putin concluded: many of the projects to develop relations between the two countries are moving forward with the support of Iran’s Leader, and we hope that this support will continue in the future.
