According to Sputnik, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s schedule for his July 19 trip to Tehran is a very full one — so much so that he will not be back in Moscow until nightfall. He is expected to meet with Erdoğan, Khamenei and Raisi, and to hold talks on Syria in the Astana format (Russia, Türkiye, Iran).
The President of the Russian Federation will also discuss the nuclear deal with his Iranian counterparts. Moscow intends to keep up its efforts to lift the Western restrictions on Iran. On top of that, both countries are looking to raise their relations to the level of a strategic partnership, and a new intergovernmental agreement is already being drawn up.
Vladimir Putin will also discuss international affairs and the Ukraine crisis with his Turkish counterpart. The two heads of state will talk, for example, about the state of grain exports from Ukrainian ports. In any case, the second meeting of the delegations of Türkiye, the Russian Federation, Ukraine and the United Nations on the “grain issue” is due to be held this week.
The trilateral meeting will focus on Syria. Topics on the table include steps towards the final elimination of the hotbed of terrorism in Syria, as well as humanitarian aid issues. Following the talks, the politicians will adopt a joint statement.
During his trip to Tehran, Vladimir Putin will meet and hold talks with his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi. He will also meet with Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader.
Putin will also hold a bilateral meeting in Tehran with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. It appears that, alongside Syria, the main focus of the Russian and Turkish presidents’ talks in Tehran will be the Ukraine crisis, food security and Ukrainian grain exports. Since the war in Ukraine broke out, the Turkish government has been trying to use its relatively good relations with both Russia and Ukraine to play a kind of mediating role in resolving the crisis.
